For several years, Sri Lanka has proudly been one of the world’s top
destinations to observe Blue Whales and Sperm Whales as they migrate
through the warm waters of the Bay of Bengal. These majestic creatures are
commonly spotted off the eastern coast of Trincomalee.

What can you see?
Experience the largest mammals on Earth in their natural habitat!

  • Blue Whales can grow up to 100 feet (30 meters) long and weigh over 200 tons. Despite their size, they are gentle giants that feed almost exclusively on tiny shrimp-like creatures called krill.
  • Sperm Whales, the largest toothed whales, are known for their massiveheads and rounded foreheads, housing the largest brain of any creatureever to live on Earth.
  • You may also see playful groups of spinner dolphins dancing around theboat!

When to go?

The best time for sightings is between late February and March, during the whales’ migration around the island. However, sightings are also possible into April and beyond, depending on conditions.

How long is the tour?

  • Meet at the Dive Center: 5:45 AM
  • Boat departs: 6:00 AM, right in front of the beach
  • Return: Approximately 8:15 AM just in time for a well-deserved
    breakfast!

Please note: the Indian Ocean can be choppy at times. If you’re prone to seasickness, we recommend taking motion sickness
medication 1 hour before departure.
